The History of AMG®

With a desire to create speed, founders Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher spent their spare time building the SE racing engine in the 1960s. The rest is history:

  • In 1965, a colleague used their engine in his race at the German Touring Car Championship and won 10 times.
  • In 1967, the men founded their own company dedicated to creating racing engines, and the AMG® engine was born.
  • Over the years, the AMG® engine was placed into more Mercedes-Benz models, and the company grew from a two-man operation into a mid-size company.
  • In 1984, AMG® solely became an engine manufacturer when Melcher developed an independent cylinder head engine.
  • In 1993, the company unveiled the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG®, the first joint vehicle between the new Mercedes-Benz company and AMG®.
