• Upper Gauley: Ranked as one of the top five rivers to raft in the world, the upper Gauley channels the most extreme of West Virginia white water rafting. Only for the experienced, this 13-mile route boasts solid Class IV and Class V rapids with drops up to 335 ft. Rafters will love the challenge and heart-pounding excitement of the “Big Five,” a series of steep, voluminous Class V rapids careening between large boulders. The rapids only get more potent during “Gauley season” when water from the Summersville Dam is released into the river.
• Lower Gauley: While not quite as intense as the upper Gauley, the lower Gauley still delivers pulse-pounding excitement for adrenaline junkies. Over this 17-mile stretch of river, 70 rapids ranging from Class III to Class V can be found. This provides intermediate rafters with extreme thrills as well as time to catch their breath and enjoy the view.
